Passport photo rejected: what to do
A rejection is annoying but usually fixable. Read the letter or email carefully—agencies often name the exact problem. Then retake or re-export with that issue fixed. PassPhotoSnap helps with size and background only; we never retouch faces (no smoothing, filters, or face reshaping).
Common rejection reasons
- Glasses — Remove them unless you have a signed medical statement.
- Shadows — Soft light from the front; stand a few feet from the wall so the background stays bright and even.
- Wrong size — Printed photos must be exactly 2×2 inches; digital files are often 600×600 px or larger.
- Head size / eye line — Head too big or too small, or eyes outside the allowed band.
- Background — Patterns, other people, tinted walls, or busy rooms.
- Expression / focus — Squinting, big grin, closed eyes, or a blurry image.
- Face edits — Beauty filters and retouching apps. Start from an unedited photo.
Quick fix checklist
- Take a new photo: camera at eye level, even light, plain wall, no glasses.
- Crop to 2×2 / 600×600 and check head height against the guides.
- Use a plain white or off-white background—without changing your face.
- Print at 100% scale if submitting a paper photo.
- Confirm current rules on travel.state.gov.
